You may be able to avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge
If you are from a country that has an RHCA with Australia and you’re on one of our RHCA plans, and are a single earning over $90,000 per year or a couple earning over $180,000, you may be able avoid liabilities such as the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS).**
How the Australian healthcare system works
Before you visit Australia, it's important that you understand how the Australian healthcare system works and what this will mean for you when applying for your visa.
**Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) is a government initiative and may apply if you are a single and earn over the relevant income thresholds. The surcharge is payable for every day you don't have hospital cover within the financial year. The ATO uses a special definition of income (called income for MLS purposes, opens in a new tab) to determine whether you are liable to pay the MLS, and the rate of MLS you will have to pay. This income is different to your taxable income.
